THE 2025 GLOBE
SECTION HIGHLIGHTS
The District at Large success: A Section restored
S
ection IV South America successfully restored its Sec-
tion status in 2025. This milestone followed the strate-
gic 2023 creation of the District at Large to host coun-
tries like Colombia, Brazil and Peru without individual legal
status. By September 2025, membership growth officially
exceeded the required 120 Fellows, lifting the Section out of
its probationary period. As part of this growth, Peru was of-
ficially reconstituted as a standalone District after a 10-year
closure, welcoming 10 new Fellows and six reinstated mem-
bers in Lima. This administrative evolution remains a vital
solution for strengthening the Section across South America.
The Brazil revival: Institutional growth and
government honors
The Brazilian District experienced a historic revitalization
by aligning with honorary dental academies to leverage
existing infrastructure and expand the College’s national
presence. On Oct. 25, National Dentist’s Day, the Legis-
lative Assembly of Paraná honored the profession before
1,000 people and awarded the ICD a diploma of honor.
Clinical impact followed, with a team led by Fellow Ne-
reida Zuleika Hessel Dias reaching 100,000 students for
caries prevention. Additionally, Fellow Laurindo Moacir
Sassi screened 380 patients for oral cancer, identifying 75
oral lesions and four malignant cases that were referred
for immediate, lifesaving treatment.
Service and scholarship: Humanitarian and re-
search milestones in Uruguay and Paraguay
The Uruguay District completed a humanitarian project at a
school for children with disabilities in Salto. Supported by a
Henry Schein scholarship, the initiative provided clinical in-
terventions for vulnerable youth. The District also manages
the Maria Inés Navarra Award for research and collaborated
with the Uruguayan Society of Dental Research to link den-
tal faculties nationwide. Academically, the District hosted a
high-attendance conference on psychoneuroimmunoendo-
crinology. The Paraguay District continued its sustained hu-
manitarian outreach in the Paraguayan Chaco region while
organizing national scientific meetings of excellence.
Scientific momentum: Advanced training and
exchange in Chile
The Chilean District maintained its scientific momentum
through the year. In August, 100 participants attended a
training course on dentoalveolar trauma. In September, Fel-
low Milton Ramos from Chile led a scientific
session on endodontic practice for students
in the Peruvian District. Ties were strength-
ened in November when Dr. Cinthya
Chipana Herquinio from Peru presented
pediatric behavioral techniques in Santiago.
