When the Earth Shook, ICD Fellows Stood Strong

On 28 March 2025, a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar’s Sagaing–Mandalay region along the Sagaing Fault. The shallow rupture triggered violent shaking, collapsing more than 15,000 homes and damaging over 120,000 buildings, including hospitals, schools and temples. Approximately 5,352 people were killed, tens of thousands were injured, and basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges were damaged extensively. Many buildings including the dental university, mosques, monasteries, nunneries and pagodas, and power lines were severely disrupted. Entire communities were left without safe shelter, clean water or reliable health care.

For weeks, ICD Section XIV Myanmar President Myo Thant and Global Councilor Thin Naing, along with other Fellows, have been providing oral health and other humanitarian services to people of the Mandalay and Sagaing regions, who remain in urgent need of shelter, health care, water and sanitation, cash assistance, and protection. ICD Section XIV’s earthquake relief funds service humanitarian aid and educational support to not only dental families including dentists, nurses, nurse-aides and dental technicians, but also to the affected people who are most in need.
