Stepping Far Outside Their Familiar Clinics to Change Lives in Guatemala

As dental professionals, many of us are accustomed to solving complex problems within the controlled, predictable environment of our clinics. But what happens when you step beyond those familiar walls? In January, a team of 19 volunteers, led by Section II ICD Fellow Dr. Rick Caldwell, left the comforts of modern dentistry behind to face the profound challenges of serving 727 patients in a makeshift clinic in Jalpatagua, Guatemala. The team, which included ICD Fellows Dr. Pravir Patel, Dr. Jeff Diefenbacher, and Dr. Tim Lee, performed 2,104 procedures under these demanding circumstances.

“At times, the need can be quite overwhelming and the stories we heard from families in need, quite heart-wrenching,” reported Dr. Rick Caldwell. This candid statement captures the reality of our humanitarian work. The mission was not easy. It involved long days, adapting to equipment in a temporary setting, and the emotional weight of seeing poverty and advanced dental disease on a scale most of us rarely encounter.

Yet, with such challenges come incredible rewards. The reward is not found in financial compensation, but in the immediate, tangible impact of your work. It is the profound satisfaction of ending a child’s chronic pain, the deep gratitude in a parent’s eyes, and the shared camaraderie with colleagues united by a common purpose. It is a powerful, visceral reminder of why we chose this profession, not just to be dentists, but to be healers.

This is a call to our Fellows who seek a truly transformative professional experience. It is an invitation to step outside your comfort zone, to test your skills, and to reconnect with the core of your calling. If you are ready to embrace the challenge and experience the immense rewards of driving transformational work, the College wants to help you succeed. We invite you to apply for a Global Visionary Fund cash or product grant. Together, we can bring essential care to the communities that need it most.
