As I reflect on my term as Global President of the International College of Dentists (ICD), I’m filled with gratitude for the privilege to witness the profound impact our Fellows are making worldwide. Over the past months, I’ve visited multiple Sections, connected with local leaders, celebrated new Fellows and engaged in important conversations about our profession’s future.
My journey began in New York City in November at the Global Convocation following the Council Meeting where I was elected President. The energy was palpable, and the sense of unity amongst Fellows was inspiring.
In Manila, Philippines, this January, Section IX showcased remarkable humanitarian efforts through dental missions and public health education—models for other Sections. The warmth and professionalism of the Fellows reaffirmed the compassion that defines ICD.
Visiting Chennai, India, in February, I reconnected with Past Global President Rajesh Chandna and saw innovative efforts in addressing oral care gaps through university partnerships and community clinics. The Section’s focus on mentorship and sustainability was especially motivating.
At the Miami Executive Committee meeting in March, our global leadership team worked with purpose to align on strategic goals. These productive sessions reinforced the importance of a steady, service-focused vision for the future.
This past April in Penang, Malaysia, ICD Section XV, in partnership with others, hosted a congress and convocation, exemplifying international collaboration and cultural exchange. Productive discussions with the Chinese delegation and others strengthened regional ties.
April also brought me to Boston, USA, for the Global Oral Health Leadership Institute (GOHLI) Stakeholders’ Day. Meeting the current cohort of emerging oral health leaders was a highlight and a testament to ICD’s investment in the future through this program.
My June visit to Seoul, South Korea, revealed deepening ICD partnerships between the Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Philippines sections, with the intent on expanded collaboration in the future. The Section’s commitment to education, innovation and cultural preservation was inspiring.
In Tokyo, Japan, also in June, I experienced the impressive leadership structure of Section VII, as well as its commitment to standards and service integration. Discussions on ICD’s growth in Asia were meaningful and forward-thinking.
Finally, in Salzburg, Austria, I attended the European Section meeting amidst a beautiful historical setting. The importance of dialogue between the ICD entities globally was emphasized, and European Fellows’ dedication to humanitarian work was evident, especially during the morning humanitarian symposium.
Across all travels, I’ve encountered Fellows who embody integrity, leadership and service. My wife Anne, when traveling with me, noted the warmth and friendships formed at each visit. As I enter the final months of my presidency, I remain committed to listening, learning and ensuring that every ICD Section and Region worldwide is represented and celebrated.
Thank you for the privilege to serve as your Global President.
