Multi-Year Project Expands Access to Critical Care in Lebanon

A healthy smile should never depend on a family’s ability to pay. In Beirut, four ICD Fellows are working to ensure it does not. Section X Fellows Edgard Jabbour, Edward Rizk, Fadl Khalid and Antoine Choufani are leading a critical partnership with the Lebanese University School of Dental Medicine. With support from the ICD Global Visionary Fund, they are ensuring vulnerable patients receive the high-quality care they deserve.

Over the last year, the team provided essential endodontic, restorative and pediatric treatments to 621 patients. These are children and adults who otherwise might have lived in pain due to financial constraints. By removing the cost barrier, the Section is restoring health and confidence to hundreds of families.

The project also extends a hand to those with the most complex medical needs. Under the clinical supervision of Dr. Choufani, the team recently facilitated total oral rehabilitation for four patients with special needs. These individuals required treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. This is a sophisticated level of care that provides safety and dignity to patients with severe disabilities.

This effort is about more than just immediate relief. It is about building a future of service. By managing this ongoing, multi-year program alongside graduate students, Drs. Jabbour, Rizk, Khalid and Choufani are not only healing patients today. They are modeling the ICD’s values for the next generation of dental professionals.
