Past President’s Report Maria Liza C. Centeno Section IX is 51 years old. It has ac- complished worthwhile community projects and has assisted in several sectors of the dental profession. The founding predecessors worked hand in hand with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) in uplift- ing the dental professionals in the Philippines and improving the oral health condition of the Filipino peo- ple. The Section has evolved its fo- cus on various aspects of dentistry such as the academic, humanitarian and community programs. We’ve started anew in supporting the PDA to be part of the solution in address- ing the oral health condition of the Philippines and be one with the na- tional organizations in uplifting the practice of dentistry. My congratulations to Fellow Cen- teno and her board, who will contin- ue to uphold the ICD Mission, Motto and Objectives with much enthusi- asm and passion for more focus on Section IX and ICD. 2019 Officers President: Presciosa L. President Centeno reported on the first ICD-PDA Collaboration Project. Section IX initiated a meeting with the PDA executive board to inform them of the intent to assist PDA in policies formation and other association needs. As a result, ICD organized a session wherein the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the association were re-visited to evaluate their value with the current needs of the Filipino community. International Councilor, Master Fellow Hermogenes P. Villareal, announced the Philippines Section started preparations for the global celebration of ICD Centennial in 2020. President Centeno expressed full support of the plans to initiate major projects to commemorate 100 years of the College. The afternoon lectures focused on the legal matters pertaining to den- tistry in the Philippines. Atty. Jenni- fer Uy Juanillo, DMD, MBA talked on the “Legal Issues Affecting Den- tists”. In addition, Atty. Michael San- tos, from the National Privacy Com- mission, enlightened the Fellows on the “Data Privacy Act of 2012” and its impact on the dental practice. Transformation Continues The new executive board resolved to channel its community develop- ment efforts to the ICD - Gawad Kalinga (GK) Community it started to build in 2007. Members were requested to support the needs of the families to transform the community into a productive and self-sustaining village. GK is an agent of social change as it seeks to eliminate poverty by restoring people’s dignity and building com- munities that nurture mutual sup- port and self-improvement. Ben- eficiaries of GK houses undergo a rigid selection process. In 2018, five additional houses were completed with working water pumps. Also, a donation of 2,000 seedlings of native chili pepper was made. Last September, a group went to Bataan to turn over houses to six families. The additional house was given back to the community for an- other family. Three new guests comfort rooms were built. Members of ICD helped in painting the outer walls of the comfort rooms. Each family was giv- en their early “Christmas loot bags”. An assortment of basic needs was prepared and donated by members of the Section. Second Quarterly Meeting THE GLOBE 2019 SECTION REPORTS 4 3
