HEALTH CARE PRODUCTS were donated, for the second consec- utive year, to M.E.R.G.E.D. (Michigan-Ethiopia Research, Growth, & Education in Dentistry) from the ICD Global Visionary Fund and Henry Schein grant program. M.E.R.G.E.D. aims to strengthen Ad- dis Ababa University (AAU) College of Dental Sciences’ didactic curriculum, clinical and patient care, and research programs. The donated supplies were intended for the oral hygiene instruction pro- gram and for distribution in underserved communities and schools. A M.E.R.G.E.D. team traveled to Ethiopia in 2018 to continue their research on local oral health data. The goal was to formulate an effective in-school oral health education and hygiene program to be repeated yearly by local teachers and help future generations through preventative oral care. The aim of this long-term project is to lay the groundwork for domestic dental research, to strengthen AAU’s ability to generate competent dental professionals, and to ini- tiate sustainable programs that will help the over 100 million Ethiopi- ans who are served by fewer than 600 dentists.
